Choose cloud storage by testing sharing and recovery
Compare access, ownership, sync behavior and restore options rather than the advertised capacity alone.

Define the task first
Cloud storage is an online service: uploading sends files to the provider. Capacity is only one condition. Check the account you own, how files are shared, what is synchronized, and which recovery features are included in the exact plan.
What to check
- Use a synthetic folder and check uploads, renames and conflicts from two devices if relevant.
- Create a test sharing link, inspect it from a separate account, and revoke it.
- Check version history, deletion recovery, account recovery and what changes after a plan downgrade.
- Inspect export and bulk-download behavior before depending on it as your only copy.
- Review data terms, available encryption controls and the consequences of sharing with a group.
A test you can reproduce
Share a harmless test file, change its permissions and verify the change from a recipient's view. Then delete and restore a disposable copy. Do not infer access control from the sender's logged-in preview.
Examples and official starting points
These are examples to research, not ranked winners. Their presence does not establish a current free plan, account eligibility, platform support, or privacy guarantee. Follow the official provider's current terms. Source-checked directory pages separately identify the facts and dates actually checked.
How this guide was prepared
This is an original task-selection worksheet, not a hands-on product benchmark. We have not tested every named product, scored their performance, verified regional availability, or purchased subscriptions for this guide. The content-revision date is not a provider-verification date. The exercises specify checks readers can perform with synthetic data.
